This guide explains how to set up a VPN client on an iPhone or iPad. Before following the steps in this guide, you should have already initialised the VPN on your LuJam ACPU by following the instructions in the LuJam VPN Guide, and added one or more VPN users.
1. Download the OpenVPN Connect application
Go the App Store and search for "OpenVPN Connect" application. Click on the application and you should see a description similar to the following:
Wait for the download to complete before continuing to the next step.
2. Enable Semaless VPN tunnel
For more recent versions of iOS, we recommend using a "seamless tunnel" to provide better protection when on the move. To do this, open the device's "Settings" application (icon shown below):
Scroll to the list of applications, and select the "OpenVPN" option. The configuration should look like this:
Enable the "Seamless tunnel" toggle, as shown in the above screenshot. Once done, close the settings application and move to the next step.
3. Open the email from LuJam Cyber containing the OpenVPN configuration
You should have received an email from the LuJam support team (email@example.com) with the subject "LuJam VPN Certificate for network: <name of network>". If not, please contact the local admin for the LuJam Portal, and ask them to add you as a VPN user.
This needs to be opened on the iPhone or iPad you're configuring to use VPN. Contained in the email is an OpenVPN configuration file for your VPN account - it will have the name "<your email address>.ovpn".
4. Copy the configuration to OpenVPN Connect
If you're using the Mail application, simply click on the configuration file, and select the "Copy to OpenVPN" option:
If you're not using Mail, you will need to save the file to either your iCloud or local phone. You'll then need to load this file from within OpenVPN Connect.
5. Accept the configuration with OpenVPN connect
When OpenVPN Connect starts up, you should see that a new profile is available:
Click on the "green circle with a white plus" icon to accept this new profile, and select "Allow" when the following prompt appears:
You may need to confirm your identify by, for example, Touch id or by entering your password.
6. Enter the Private Key Password
After confirming your identify, OpenVPN Connect will re-open and the configuration should now look like this:
Before connecting, you need to enter the Private Key Password. You can find the password in the second email sent by the LuJam Support team (firstname.lastname@example.org) with the subject "LuJam VPN Password for network: <company name>". If you want to only enter the password once, enable the "Save" option (as shown above).
Connecting to the VPN
You're now ready to connect to your company's network over VPN. You need to open the OpenVPN Connect application to connect. Once you've done this, below the "Disconnected" status, there's an unlabelled white toggle button. Press this to connect to the VPN. Once connected, you'll see a status similar to the following:
While your iPhone or iPad is connected to the VPN, you should see the a VPN icon at the top of the home page:
Note, you cannot open the VPN connection using the VPN toggle in the device's general Settings menu.
Disconnecting from the VPN
To disconnect from the VPN, simply press the toggle below the "Connected" status bar.
