To help our MSP partners and mid- to large-sized customers, we've released virtual sensors for testing and deployment. There are two OVAs available: one for VirtualBox and one for VMWare, both running v1.5.5 of the LuJam sensor. The OVAs downloads are just under 500M in size, and include a 16G disk image by default. The recommended configuration is 1G of memory, at least 1 core, and running in bridged mode. Custom OVAs will be provided for each partner to enable tracking of customer deployments.
The virtual sensors are ideal for the following use cases:
- in-house testing and demos
- large networks where physical sensors are not appropriate or cost prohibitive
- boosting the performance of OpenVAS scanning. Note, the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner hasn't yet been ported to the virtual sensors. A separate announcement will be made when this package is available.
Virtual deployments are not recommended for small customers, unless they have a dedicated virtual machine server. Deploying on, for example, a spare desktop/laptop may be acceptable, but could result in unintended loss of DNS/DHCP in the network.
